Re: “Closed Curtain

After seeing this film at a film festival, I concluded that the only reason it was included in its programming was the fact that it was titillating for the programmers to be able to say that they're screening a film which had to be smuggled out of Iran. The announcer breathlessly told us that Jafar Panahi has been banned from making films for 20 years and that we were part of a select audience that was watching this film in defiance of Iran. I swear...the guy was sweating and trembling and had a half-chub.

I expected this film to be great and important. All the other offerings at the AFI Fest were wonderful and inspiring. It involved a dog... I *love* dogs! Maybe the limitations of being under house arrest contributed to this film being a snoozefest, but I doubt it. Watching someone prepare and eat a meal on screen in real time is interminable. I'm sure someone will object and tell me that that's the point of this story, but I'm calling BS. This film was made with a mere vague notion of what it was trying to say and ended up not being very clear either in voice or in story.

I'll give it an extra star for the sheer effort and will required to make this film, get it smuggled out of the country and for the novelty of such a film. Excluding all these factors, the film does not stand alone as a great or even good work of art.
