Pig Destroyer

Pig Destroyer, Weekend Nachos, Plague Bringer, Lion's Daughter

When: Sat., May 17, 8 p.m. 2014
It’s tough to just lower your head and plow through a Pig Destroyer album without taking a breather. The Richmond-based grindcore band, anchored by guitarist Scott Hull (Agoraphobic Nosebleed) and bloody-murder screamer J.R. Hayes, released their latest, Book Burner (Relapse), in 2012, five long years after the skull-splitting Phantom Limb, and it delighted hate-music lovers with 19 tracks of bass-free devastation—thick guitar squeals and inhumanly fast double kick drum abound. Pig Destroyer has never really pursued a war of attrition with their audience, preferring a full-on, disemboweling barrage of lightning riffage and blastbeats—they’re not so much trying to wear you down as they are going for a knockout with every song. These dudes haven’t played a proper Chicago show since the release of Book Burner—the closest they’ve come has been a set at Dark Lord Day in 2013—so I imagine this show will be absolute hellfire. Wear something nice. —Kevin Warwick
