Re: “Vigilante cyclists reunite owners with stolen bikes

How do we put a dent in bicycle theft? The answer is simple. Unfortunately, simple is not the same as easy.

Don't buy a stolen bicycle. Whenever a person is buying a used bicycle, they must check to see if it's stolen. In Chicago, check on chicago.stolenbike.org, if you're somewhere else, check the stolenbicycleregistry.com, before you buy.

If people stop buying stolen bicycles, the reason these goons are stealing the bikes will go away, and they'll stop stealing.

Currently, it's like we're fighting drugs by going after dealers. Every time you put away a dealer, another pops up. Bicycle buyers do not think of themselves as drug users, but they are the reason the dealers exist.

One other thing: Register your bike, or at least write down your bike's serial number BEFORE it's stolen. In order to report a stolen bike, or to have a chance of recovery, you must have the serial number. It's pretty much impossible to get the serial number after the bike is stolen, so make sure you have it before that happens.

And, obviously, if/when your bicycle is stolen, report it.
