Peter Case used to be in the Plimsouls. However, not only is his recent debut LP a good deal more interesting and full-bodied than I remember his former band's work to be, but it also made him one of the freshest and most warmly hailed "new" arrivals of last year. While Case has not forsaken the 60s-rooted, Beatles-inspired pop consciousness that so pervaded the Plimsouls' work, he's also grown more interested in subtlety of textures: acoustic instruments, mouth harp, and a distinct blues feel that becomes more and more apparent with repeated listenings. He's also growing as a lyricist, turning into more of a storyteller than an exclaimer. As befits an intelligent rock songwriter of 32, Case sounds less and less concerned with the pop vogue of the moment and is looking to do something less "cool," less timely, and less likely to sound outdated five years from now. The one cover tune on his album, a simple, straightforward reading of the Pogues' folky "A Pair of Brown Eyes," seems to say a lot in this context. Now I just wish he'd do something about that damn hat. Tonight, 11 PM, Cabaret Metro, 3730 N. Clark; 549-0203.
