Peter Brötzmann, Jason Adasiewicz, and Hamid Drake

When: Wed., July 24, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $15
Peter Brötzmann recently disbanded his Chicago Tentet, a long-standing band consisting mainly of free-jazz musicians from this neck of the woods, but he certainly hasn’t cut ties to the Windy City. Tonight’s concert is the second that the septuagenarian reedist has played here this year, and the trio he’ll lead brings together one of his newest local associates and one of the most established. Vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz has only been playing with Brötzmann for a couple years, but that’s been enough time for them to record a fantastic CD, Going All Fancy (Brö), that showcases a remarkable sound: though Adasiewicz thrashes his keys as though they were drums, the German relaxes his usual face-melting intensity. On the other hand, Brötzmann and drummer Hamid Drake have been partners for more than two decades. Drake’s mastery of styles from around the world and playfully provocative stylistic changes often draw Brötzmann into rhythmic terrain he’d never walk with any other collaborator. It’s safe to say that the trio will kick some ass tonight, but I wouldn’t care to predict exactly how they’ll do it—and the surprise will be part of the fun. —Bill Meyer Brötzmann, Adasiewicz, and Drake play two sets; Mr. Voice DJs. Brötzmann also plays a solo set at Experimental Sound Studio at 3 PM on Sun 7/28.
