Peter Brotzmann & Jason Adasiewicz, DJs Joshua Abrams and John Corbett

When: Wed., Sept. 12, 9:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $15
Since he began recording in the mid-60s, stormy German reedist Peter Brötzmann has amassed an enormous and diverse discography. But though his gallery of collaborators includes everyone from first-generation free-jazz trumpeter Don Cherry to post-everything force of nature Keiji Haino, you have to look damn hard to find a mallet player. That changed last year, though, when Brötzmann used a set at the Vision Festival (on a night celebrating his 70th birthday) to unveil a duo with Chicago vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz. The vibes are often used in jazz to generate hazy atmosphere, but Adasiewicz is the rare player who hits as hard as he swings. That first encounter went well enough for the two men to book a tour together; while they've both played Chicago dozens of times, this is their first local concert together. The duo will play two sets; Joshua Abrams and John Corbett will DJ. On Sat 9/15 at Elastic, Brötzmann and Adasiewicz will perform again, this time with bassist Joshua Abrams and drummer Hamid Drake making the group a quartet. —Bill Meyer
