The Detroit duo Perspects tends to make grandiose but empty statements about what it wants its music to accomplish--for example, producing "the effects of maximum convenience on the present-day human mind." But the music--aggressive pop played on cold synthesizers, occasionally sidestepping repetition and juxtaposing unrelated rhythms--more than makes up for all the hot air. Musician, producer, and multimedia artist Ian Clark founded the band in 1999, after he and Adam Lee Miller (now of Adult.) broke up their trendsetting electro band Le Car. Perspects's first EP, Desire & Efficiency (on Miller's Ersatz Audio label), is all simple melodies and heavy, polished beats, but Clark claims the music's grown more "refined and sophisticated" since Interlochen product Mark Erwin joined as a vocalist in February. The only new material I've heard is "They Keep Dancing," from a forthcoming Italian disco comp, Disco Nouveau (Ghostly International); the sound is definitely more controlled than on Clark's earlier instrumentals, and Erwin sounds like a cabaret dandy on heavy sedatives. I don't know if that qualifies as worldly, exactly, but it's still fun. Ectomorph headlines. Thursday, September 27, 10 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western; 773-276-3600.
