Murder can be both literal and metaphorical, as writer-director Catherine Breillat demonstrates in this cynical, honest 1996 love story. In shots that resemble interviews, a young woman admits hating her mother, then starts to tell us how her mother met the man who killed her. As if in flashback, the mother's relationship with this younger man begins to unfold through events that rarely include the daughter, leading us to push aside the knowledge that the affair will end in tragedy. The all-too-realistic relationship--the lovers are plagued by jealousy and boredom after the initial joy of reimagining themselves fades--becomes a living death for both participants, making the murder almost inconsequential.
