Re: “Rahm gets into the real estate game—with your money

"As a result of nearly two decades of South Loop development—a good chunk of it subsidized with TIF money—nearly every lot is filled with townhomes or high-rises." Well then, the TIF worked, didn't it?

Re: “Should we be giddy about our cities when so many are suffering in them?

Did anyone else actually read the Brookings book, or are we all just ragging on some vague connection to Rahm Emanuel and Tom Friedman? The point is, cities can't solve entrenched poverty without enlisting resources from outside poor neighborhoods. Inequality is a global issue with local implications, not vice versa. Katz & Bradley correctly identify ways in which metro areas are acting to capture new economic opportunities, which will allow them to come up with resources to address problems (that may have existed for centuries). This isn't some sort of neoliberal investment banking triumphalism, this is basic foresight.

As for the headline, "Should we be giddy about our [Midwestern emo, "streetwear with a flair," The Smurfs, ramen & pie -- just to choose random Reader headlines] when so many are suffering in [our cities]?" Anyone who isn't Mother Teresa has no right to seriously ask that kind of question.

Re: “Going Down at Richland Center, Chinatown

I chanced across this little food court last week. It could use a lot more visibility, sure, but let's have more! I vastly prefer something cooked indoors, with a warm dining space and trash cans and restrooms, to something dished from a food truck.
