Paul Sanasardo and Dmitri Peskov

When: June 26-27 2009
Phone: 312-337-6543
Price: $15-$20, $50 for performance and benefit on Saturday
Choreographer Paul Sanasardo celebrates turning 80 with the ambitious new Sleepless Nights in the City, inspired partly by Edward Hopper's painting Nighthawks. This harsh work in five sections--one of them set to an ear-splitting John Adams composition for sirens--captures the menace of lonely urban streets, especially in scenes between a homeless woman and a Travis Bickle-type midnight marauder. In other sections, duets featuring large, free movement and bold displays of strength and dexterity suggest that men and women prey on one another yet yearn for something better. The rest of the bill is choreography by Moscow-born Sanasardo protege Dmitri Peskov, including two premieres. Always quirky and blunt, Peskov begins his new The Suite in Old Style with two patently sexual sections, then swerves into a twitchy tour de force solo for Paul Christiano, who delivers a stream of mercurial emotions. The other premiere--Eros, set like The Suite in Old Style to music by Alfred Schnittke--is performed by the passionate Peskov himself. Stray Dog, Nijinsky, and Mirror and Mirror round out the program. --Laura Molzahn
