Re: “School closings in Chicago—I ain't over 'em yet!

Citizenarrest. I think you need to get a clue. Essentially the ILLINOS TAX PAYERS DO PAY KAREN LEWIS' SALARY. The legislation for "fair share" is designed to ensure that teachers pay union dues. If they do not want to pay union dues, they have to pay their "fair share" which goes to the UNION and the union pays Karen's salary. A teacher has NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY AT LEAST THE FAIR SHARE dues if they choose not to "join the union". It is taken out of their paycheck regardless. Tricky legislation that is a complete sham on the teachers and the taxpayers. That is what the union pushed the legislators to do and it is a complete sham on the taxpayers of Illinois.

It is a complete outrage as a citizen and taxpayer that I am paying for the union AND paying for the school system. I am paying for two idiotic bureaucracies to fight each other. It is ridiculous and I think Ben and other journalists should point out this absurdity instead of playing one sided journalism.

Amy T. Your article says the union declined to share Lewis' salary. No surprise there. But if you do the math on the numbers they do give. You get about $300k.
"Teachers union officials declined to provide information on Lewis' salary. But Stewart made $211,119 in 2009, her final full year in office. Lewis took over as president for part of 2010, and was paid $71,330 by the teachers union that year, records indicate.

Lewis also is eligible for compensation from the Illinois Federation of Teachers, and in 2011 she was paid $64,157 by that group, records indicate."

Re: “School closings in Chicago—I ain't over 'em yet!

You note that taxpayers pay BBB salary. You should also point out that taxpayers pay CTU president Karen Lewis' huge salary over $300,000. (Plus she holds several "jobs" and gets paid for all of them.) Thanks to the sham legislators over the years who cater to union demands to get political backing, all union members are forced to pay their "fair share". It essentially is designed to force everyone to pay union dues whether they want to or not. Of course, the unionists would argue that one can choose to "not join the union" but the teacher who wants to do this, STILL has to pay its "fair share" dues. There is virtually no cost savings of not joining the union and with the strong arm union bullying at each school, teachers just join because they may as well get a vote for their money and avoid being ostracized by the school union rep.

So the taxpayers pay CPS CEO salary AND CTU President salary. The taxpayers sure do look like fools! Ben, why don't you try reporting on something like this?
