Dan Yemin has an unblemished record in melodic hardcore punk. He’s a founding guitarist of the seminal Lifetime—a Jersey band that helped define the genre in the 90s, then opened the door for an emo upsurge near the decade’s end—and of Philly’s Kid Dynamite, a lethal and anthemic outfit that lived a life too short. He began Paint It Black in 2001, tossing aside the guitar to go all-out front man, a role he had to grow into. From day one, Yemin’s exasperated voice—like Earth just took a giant dump on his chest—has been at full throttle, but his hardcore bravado needed to ramp up across three studio albums and a handful of EPs to get to where it’s clipping the speakers. Paint It Black’s most recent EP, 2013’s Invisible, might be the best blend yet of Yemin’s rabid anger and the band’s steady, blistering rumble. —Kevin Warwick
