The Tympanic Theatre Company's spin on the Frankenstein story concerns a scientist who invents the world's first fully functioning android, Ozma. The project goes awry when Ozma secretly joins the workaholic inventor's neglected wife, Harriet, in watching inane Friday-night sitcoms like Dinosaurs and Family Matters. Ozma's ability to distinguish real life from TV becomes blurred even as he forms a romantic bond with Harriet. The theme of reality vs. fantasy is underscored by the presence of four idiotic "grips" who set up each scene, spouting gibberish while egging Ozma on to his increasingly dark sexual adventures. Timothy Bambara's staging of the script by Tympanic artistic director Daniel Caffrey is an intriguing if not wholly successful effort from an emerging troupe dedicated to "producing new work with fantastical, frightening, or absurd subject matter." --Albert Williams
