Bob Nanna has kept so busy playing with Braid in support of the band’s excellent new No Coast that it’s been easy to forget about the other irons he has in the fire, especially the newest: emo supergroup Lifted Bells, where he plays with heavies from fourth-wave bands. Of course, it helps that Lifted Bells haven’t played a show in more than a year and have only one release. Their 2013 self-titled debut EP (Naked Ally) is masterfully executed, with webs of intricate, mathy guitar, and charged with euphoric catharses. Guitarist Matthew Frank (Their/They’re/There, Loose Lips Sink Ships) taps up and down his neck as fast as Sonic the Hedgehog, but the good-natured warmth and unpretentiousness of Nanna’s vocals keep the soaring peaks and dazzling fireworks rooted on earth. On “Orphaned” and “Re: Calm,” he describes his experiences as an adoptee and his newfound relationship with his birth family, giving the songs’ earnest vulnerability a bump of spine-tingling voltage. —Leor Galil
