Local playwright Laura Nessler's drama is loosely based on the story of Viola Liuzzo (Eva LaPorte), a housewife and mother from Detroit who headed to Selma, Alabama, in 1965 to march for civil rights. Liuzzo’s story is moving, but Nessler’s play aims to do much more, giving us a sprawling, multifaceted plot line also featuring the saga of Leroy (Eric Gerard) and his mother, Jessie (Shariba Rivers), African-Americans committed to living in the south long after the rest of their family has moved north. Perhaps because of this, the work could use some editing; still, there’s much that's effective here, especially the inclusion of documentary bits such as Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech from Selma and the searing vocals of Nina Simone and Billie Holiday. —Suzanne Scanlon
