The short videos by Susan Giles and Wenhwa Ts'ao on this program are very good, as are the two early works by Gary Hill, in which the sound track is as important as the image. His Soundings (1979) experiments with the idea that invisible sound is created by visible things. In Why Do Things Get in a Muddle? (1984) we see two performers reading texts by Gregory Bateson and Lewis Carroll in reverse—but in reverse motion, so that what they say is as written but sounds weird. Props such as a chessboard and gyroscope add allusive weightiness to the subjects of communication and miscommunication, order and chaos. 64 min.
