Under the Gun Theater’s clever new long-form improv concept is original and ambitious: Let the audience choose a fundamental human right to see taken away in a dystopian vision of America. And like so many other clever long-form setups, on opening night, this one resulted in the sort of unwieldy mess only true ambition could create. The problem wasn’t in the premise, which was quite workable—dissidents perform at an open-mike night in a society with no freedom of speech—but in the sheer number of comedians onstage, all seemingly unable to move the story forward toward any resolution—and I do mean any. Neither I nor the audience nor the bartender knew whether or not the show was complete when the house lights suddenly went up one hour in. —Dan Jakes
