Thornton Wilder's 1938 classic is an unassuming orchestration of the quotidian elements that make human life both unremarkable and sacred. Everything about it is small and gentle, so you might not expect it to survive the myriad distractions of Theatre-Hikes' outdoor, promenade-style production--which, when I attended, included startling cameos by a huge stick bug and a deer. And yet director Frank Farrell is so conscientious about the basics of intelligibility--simple blocking, emblematic costuming, vocal projection--that nearly everything comes across. Much of it is labored, the cast often acting as though every line should be carved on a monument. But the final act feels effortless and heartbreaking. --Justin Hayford
