To the editors:

This is in reply to Ron Baumgarten's letter (March 9), which was written in response to Prof. Regalbuto's article ["Uncle J.R. Explains It All for You," by Harold Henderson, February 9], which advocates the mistreatment of animals because they have no "souls."

Mr. Baumgarten writes "The existence or non existence of 'souls' can probably never be proven by science." I beg to differ with him. What we consider to be our "souls" are nothing but our cognitions of our existence during our awakened (sensate) state.

I, too, am a scientist, but without portfolio. I've excerpted an article from my book on human behavior (Society, Pain & the Unknown). The article is titled "We're All Robots!" It explains why there is no such thing as a "soul," simply because we're all--humans, animals and plants--nothing but separately-operating units of communally-controlled, organized, synergistically-benefitting, living-cell organisms. These cells developed sensory organs in us to provide for, protect and preserve the continuing existence of the cells themselves!

In other words, we are not entities living for our own benefit. We are living units doing the bidding of our cells; seeking food, water, shelter, comfort, safety and pleasure in an effort to keep our cells alive and in good health. Additionally, our body cells control and direct our every movement and thought.

To further reply to the question of "souls": since we are nothing but a package of organized cells that have developed themselves into the shape of humans, I'll toss a question back to you: Do cells have "souls"?

If anyone would like a free copy of my article "We're All Robots!" write me at Box 268375, Chicago, IL 60626. It will "explain it all for you."
