This 1960 Carol Reed satire adapted by Graham Greene from his own novel always seems to be verging on high comedy but never quite makes it. Still, there are some gentle laughs in this story of a British vacuum cleaner salesman (Alec Guinness), recruited by British intelligence to spy on the (pre-Castro) regime in Cuba, who finds he never has anything to report to London and so begins fabricating information. Guinness is in above-average form, and Ernie Kovacs is wonderful as the callous but charming government official with a soft spot for Guinness's daughter. With Noel Coward, Burl Ives, Maureen O'Hara, and Ralph Richardson.
