This blast from the past is also a promissory note. Taking us back to the future, Lookingglass ensemble member Raymond Fox plays architect and city-planner Daniel Burnham presenting his 1909 Plan of Chicago in 40 prophetic minutes. Impassioned and idealistic, Burnham proposes a far-sighted, egalitarian, and principled vision. "Our future metropolis," he says, will enjoy an unspoiled lakefront, diagonal boulevards, playgrounds for all children, emerald necklaces of parks and preserves, two huge piers, and a bi-level Michigan Avenue where commercial traffic is separated from public and private transit. John Musial's staging employs "magic lantern" slides that convey the full sweep of Burnham's democratic dream, much of which came true. The July 14 performance is part of a benefit honoring Department of Cultural Affairs head Lois Weisberg. --Lawrence Bommer
