The German Army took control of Jedwabne, Poland, in the early summer of 1941, routing the Soviets who'd previously occupied it. On July 10, the town's Jews were called together, publicly humiliated, viciously brutalized, and then massacred. Some were shot, but most—as many as 1,600—were burned alive in a locked barn. The official postwar line said the atrocity was ordered by the Nazis. In 2000, however, historian Jan Gross published Neighbors, which demonstrated that in fact local citizens conceived and carried it out entirely on their own—an old-fashioned pogrom. Tadeusz Slobodzianek's Our Class follows ten Jedwabne schoolmates as malign traditions overtake them, dividing them into Christians and Jews, Poles and outsiders, murderers and victims. Given a stark yet delicate (and, often enough, black-comic) staging by Remy Bumppo Theatre's Nick Sandys, the genius of the play consists in the fact that it doesn't stop with the crime but makes us watch as lies poison the decades that follow. —Tony Adler
