Reminiscent (for better and for worse) of Bob Fosse's Star 80 (1983), this creepy domestic drama by Belgian writer-director Joachim Lafosse (Private Property) was inspired by the case of Geneviève Lhermitte, who killed her five children in 2007. Here the mother (Émilie Dequenne) is an emotionally fragile woman driven to insanity by a controlling doctor (Niels Arestrup) who's insinuated his way into the family of her Moroccan husband (Tahar Rahim). Ultimately Lafosseovie is more interested in the doctor, a charming monster, than in the woman. Some viewers may be sickened by their sadomasochistic relationship, but Lafosse and his actors throw themselves into it. The French title, À Perdre la Raison, translates as "to lose reason." In French with subtitles.
