Director Carlo Lorenzo Garcia and Mary-Arrchie Theatre staged a well-received production of Douglas Maxwell's play in 2008. Now they've revived it, and the result is, oh, say, seven-eighths—maybe even fifteen-sixteenths—of a very fine show. Set in the Scottish coastal town of Girvan, Our Bad Magnet follows three average boys whose lives are marked by a talented, tragic fourth: the ironically nicknamed Giggles, author of melancholy fables about lonely emperors, vicious butchers, and magnet people who can't help but repel one another. We see them first in 2001, as estranged pseudo-adults, then flash back to find out how they got that way. In the meantime Garcia, his designers, and a strong ensemble do a great job of enacting Giggle's tales. It's powerful fun until the final passage, which stalls out because of a failure truly to engage the script's homoerotic subtext. —Tony Adler
