Seven 2004 shorts nominated for Oscars—plus a Student Academy Award winner—beguile with their imaginative sweep. The Australian animated Birthday Boy is wondrous; Sejong Park's expressive CGI rendering captures the end of innocence for a playful Korean lad in a war-torn village. Equally poignant is Ryan, the 3-D animated entry from Canada's Chris Landreth, whose startling homage to legendary Montreal animator Ryan Larkin depicts the now destitute artist as a literal shell of his former self. Live-action shorts include the sweet puppy-love story Two Cars, One Night, by New Zealand's Taika Waititi and Ainsley Gardiner, and Nacho Vigalondo's 7:35 in the Morning, a Spanish serenade with an explosive outcome. 100 min.
