Lia Ices

Operators, Lia Ices, Lowell, Mister Suit

When: Wed., Jan. 14, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $15, $100 five-day TNK pass
Singer Lia Ices pushes the beats to the fore on her third album, Ices (Jagjaguwar), coproducing the effort with her brother Eliot Kessel (who appears under the name Benny Sagittarius) and transforming ethereal piano balladry into something more sparkly and quasi-global (in a Yeasayer sort of way). The opening track, “Tell Me,” hijacks the percolating tabla of a Bollywood groove, while “Higher,” one of several tunes with additional production work from Clams Casino, gets its juice from neo-80s new wave. The melodies are catchy enough, featuring soaring choruses and club-filling sonic depth, but Ices’s voice surrenders the intimacy and nuance that made it stick out on her previous works—without electronic enhancements it would wilt under these large, artificial productions. This show is part of the Tomorrow Never Knows festival. —Peter Margasak
