Pretty much everything about Retrash (Thrill Jockey), the debut LP by local heavy-metal trio Oozing Wound, speaks to my inner Gwar-loving Beavis and/or Butthead—the headbangable rompers, the giant space centipede eating an astronaut on the cover, the song title “Welcome to the Spaceship, Motherfucker.” But even though these guys are obviously joking around, they’re also deadly serious. Born out of weirdo noise-rock groups Cacaw, Bad Drugs, and Unmanned Ship, among others, Oozing Wound creates some of the most intensely heavy and perfectly executed thrash metal since Megadeth’s heyday. Part of what makes the band so great is their power-trio configuration, which allows all three to occupy the foreground at all times—nothing ever distracts you from Kyle Reynolds’s merciless drum-kit slamming, Zack Weil’s unsettling shriek and furious nonstop palm-muted guitar rhythms, or Kevin Cribbin’s Cliff Burton-style bass riffs (and the hanging bent notes he likes to use instead of fills). Retrash is streamlined, straightforward thrash—except for “Call Your Guy,” a bombastic ode to drug dealers everywhere, which heaves and stomps with an Eyehategod sludge vibe—and there’s not a dull moment on it. Recorded at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio, the album sounds absolutely massive, with each instrument so huge you wouldn’t think there’d be room for the others.
