Dear Mr. Miner,

Your friend in England better check her itinerary for the next Olympics [Hot Type, July 12]. The English World Cup soccer team played all of its games in Japan and not Korea. It would be difficult to imagine the English team "'turning up their noses' at their Korean hosts" when they knew the Japanese would be their hosts for their first six games, if they got that far in the tournament. Nice quote, but totally and completely inaccurate on its face. I guess your friend owes the entire English and Korean nations an apology.

Yours in soccer,
Pete Stoncius
Orland Park

Michael Miner replies:

True enough, the Koreans weren't their hosts. A big mistake on my part, not my friend's. Regardless, it's true that the "dog-eating controversy," as Mark Brown reported in his original column, "received considerably more attention in the British press than it has in the United States." My friend in London reacted to this attention. Apparently the noble English nose could sniff out declasse cuisine from across the Korea Strait.
