Four Depression-era Okies—a pair of brothers and a pair of sisters—flee the barren dust bowl for the promised land of California in this tragicomedy by Jesse Miller. The characters' adolescent sexual cravings are mostly played for laughs, while the playwright takes a more sober approach to depicting their connection to the land (about which they rhapsodize incessantly) and their uncertain prospects, which seem fated to wither as surely as the crops back in Oklahoma. The cast of James Bezy's staging for Benevolent Theatre do a good job of keeping their energy levels up, but any subtlety or specificity in the script gets lost along the way. Sometimes it's hard to figure out whether the characters are supposed to be teenagers or simpletons. —Zac Thompson
