Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Circuit des Yeux, Soleman 18+ Early Warnings (Music)

When: Thu., Jan. 16, 9 p.m. 2014
Part of the Tomorrow Never Knows festival. I’ve listened to Oneohtrix Point Never’s latest album, R Plus Seven (Warp), a dozen times, and I’m still equal parts disoriented and beguiled by his choppy production style, which builds the record’s disjointed array of interconnected vignettes by shuffling decades-old preset tones, robotized simulacrums of human voices (a la the Fairlight synthesizer), and terse samples of pop music. —Peter Margasak, 2013

Hecker also traverses a lot of aesthetic ground on Virgins, orchestrating squirming soundscapes in one moment (“Virginal I” is like a thicket of swirling wind chimes just before a storm, backed by a distorted, catastrophic rumble) and summoning a celestial chorus in another (“Radiance”). Hypnotic repetition is the album’s siren song, captivating your attention at least until you get distracted when Hecker piles up creaks, grones, and drones on top of his loops all at once. —Kevin Warwick, 2013
