Ten female vocalists compete on an American Idol-style TV show, paying homage to legendary R&B artists by belting out their hits before what writer-director Rueben Echoles frames as a live studio audience. Up-and-coming Broadway starlet Marylin butts heads with Tanika, a brash pisher trying to make her way, while host Sam flirts with—oh, none of it actually matters. What's important is that every member of a diva-packed ensemble can shake Black Ensemble's gorgeous new Uptown house. Echoles's production minimizes BE's weak points—subtlety and storytelling—and highlights what the company does best: bubbly spectacle and a down-to-earth good time. Katrina Miller does a mean Tina Turner, and Dawn Bless's nod to Patti Labelle is concert-worthy in and of itself. —Dan Jakes
