Takashi Miike's fiendishly original and profoundly disturbing psychodrama Audition (1999) put him on the world map as a master of suspense. Disappointingly, the shocks are muted in this generic 2003 effort, a story of revenge from beyond the grave. Students begin getting cell-phone messages dated in the future and presaging disaster; sure enough, a ghostly presence shows up at the appointed times to murder the kids one by one. The climactic sequence in an abandoned hospital is stylish and creepy enough to jangle the nerves, but the movie is neither as inventive nor as bold as some of Miike's previous work, playing instead like The Ring redux. In Japanese with subtitles. R, 112 min.
