Norman Vincent Peale tops a long list of clergymen who were consulted for this pious 1941 Warner Brothers drama about a Canadian doctor (Fredric March) who announces to his rich young fiancee and her parents that he's had a conversion experience and decided to become a Methodist minister in the United States. Beginning in 1906, it follows the preacher, his wife (Martha Scott), and their three children from one small-town parish to the next, through world war and the first pains of the Depression. The movie's stiff sense of virtue won it an Oscar nomination, but more impressive is Scott's weirdly distant performance as a woman who impulsively accepts the life of a church mouse and then finds she can't do much for her children. Irving Rapper (Now, Voyager) directed; Max Steiner wrote the score. 108 min.
