Unlike Rabbit Hole, David Lindsay-Abaire's politely mournful look at the aftermath of a child's death, Simon Stephens's drama doesn't shy away from the messiness of grief. Tracing the effects of a tragic accident on three generations of the working-class Holmes family, Stephens melds big-ticket issues such as spousal abuse, alcoholism, and infidelity (of mind, if not body) deftly, with wit and a deep respect for his characters. Jonathan Berry's sensitive direction allows enough breathing room for his earnest and wholly affecting cast to fill Griffin Theatre's American premiere production with honest behavior, never letting the symbolism (the anguished father is a house restorer, for example) overcome the abundant emotional truths. --Kerry Reid
