On the Downlow

Filmmaker Abigail Child presents brief portraits of four Cleveland residents to consider the challenges faced by closeted gay men in the African-American community. The results are superficial and not especially compelling, in large part because Child offers so little context or even the basic details of her subjects' lives. Intriguing and potentially important issues are left hanging: a father loses custody of his children when the court removes them from their mother, but Child never clarifies whether his sexuality had anything to do with the decision. Despite some fascinating moments, this 56-minute video feels like a work in progress.
