Re: “Hey, Mr. Mayor: Don't mess with Wendy Katten!

Don't forget to add that, charter school teachers do not have to be certified and many are from TFA. Also, the CTU is not allowed in charter schools.

Re: “Disqualified Art Loop Open Finalist Cries Foul

First thing is that my work is in Block 37 and I have been there often installing. So, I've seen bernard's piece many, many times. Every time I see it, it becomes a stronger piece. It is an amazing work of art and how he is being treated is unfortunate.
How great would it have been to see the vast artistic community of chicago as just that a community. Instead of in competition against with each other for very LARGE sums of money. Honestly, the money I have spent participating in this event is really $ I don't have. Between the entry fee and parking for several days at Block 37, I've spent a least $200, (not including the materials to create the work), others have renting cars, hurried to get work framed (due to the short notice of acceptance) and then while many of us are pulling out pennies together: there is 50,000 thousand dollars of prize money... something is very askew. Knowing now that the emphasis was on the CONTEST and not the ART, I'm not sure I would have participated. Also, the fact that the work doesn't go on sale until after all this contest stuff over is also a hardship on the artists. Like gallery shows, the work should be on sale from the opening, but can not be brought home until after the show. Those red dots are a standard in the gallery world. Asking the public to vote, vote again and then buy art is just too much...... I have no problem with the awards that are non voted on by the public. Those are typical and meeting a set of criteria that the givers of the award are looking to meet.

I've been waiting to see what the controversy would be about this voting, it was something that was bound to happen.... I'm curious about the transparency of all the votes.... Who actually sees the info and will it be made available for public view.

I am however, thrilled with the response my piece has received and there is a part that asks for participation, "make your mark" and I am beyond amazed at the way the piece has evolved. I have also meet some wonderful artists, that I look forward to working with after this show ends.

The people at CAC and Loop Art Alliance have all worked very hard on this project and it shows in the marketing and sponsorship. I just feel that all the work they did was without consulting artists. Involving an advisory group of visual artist might also help in the planning of Art Loop Open 2011.
