Olympic Glory

The metaphor of the Olympic torch may be belabored in a voice-over delivered by Stacy Keach, but that's about the only thing wrong with this exciting large-format documentary about the 1998 winter games at Nagano, which gives nearly equal attention to successes and failures. The most moving footage is an interview with Kenyan runner Philip Boit after he attempted cross-country skiing; a colleague of Boit's stands silently beside him, conveying admiration, respect, and love—and allowing the filmmakers to transcend typical interview style more subtly than in the footage of Picabo Street addressing the camera while perched on a rock against a sensational deep-focus landscape. Written by Thomas Keneally; directed by Kieth Merrill.
