A middle-aged married couple host the wife's old roommate, Anna, at their home. Kate hasn't seen Anna in 20 years, and husband Deeley has never met her. Or has he? Harold Pinter's 1971 play is freighted with contradictions and a sexual rivalry uneasily rooted in the past--or maybe imagination. The three characters are completely distinct, yet by the end their identities have begun to blur and overlap, and Deeley and Anna's struggle over Kate has been subordinated to Kate's passive dominance. This Remy Bumppo Theatre production treads lightly: Linda Gillum, Jenny McKnight, and Nick Sandys are clipped and restrained, very British, yet urgently involved. James Bohnen's staging, seemingly set in an eternal present of the mind, evokes Sartre's No Exit. --Laura Molzahn
