Love fades but hope for a new life in the West flowers in this intricate, three-part Romanian comedy, the 2002 feature debut of writer-director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days). In the first story, after a couple is evicted from their apartment a freak accident introduces a Belgian rival for the affections of the distraught wife. In part two, the jilted husband is clueless that his pretty new coworker has a yen for him; in the final tale, her parents see their matchmaking efforts for her backfire. The narratives circle back on each other, with the resulting shifts in POV yielding some fine, understated humor amid the devastation. In Romanian and French with subtitles. 102 min.
