Rated R · 2009

I've observed this Seth Rogen comedy, and I can report that it's not very good. Rogen had a pretty funny bit in Superbad as a jolly, hard-partying cop who had trouble staying inside the law himself, but that was a relatively fresh idea. This mean-spirited comedy by Jody Hill (also known for the overpraised The Foot Fist Way) casts the slovenly star as an officious security guard at a suburban mall, and it follows this winter's three-month run of Paul Blart: Mall Cop. There are a few good knockabout moments and verbal riffs (e.g. Rogen and a nemesis tell each other “Fuck you!” more times than you can count, working the phrase to death). But Rogen's character is too much of a dick—you never want to root for him, and he's a cold fish with women (Celia Weston as his alcoholic mom, Collette Wolfe as a snack bar cashier who adores him). With Ray Liotta, Anna Faris, and Michael Peña. R, 86 min.
