OBN IIIs, Le Tour, the Man

When: Tue., Sept. 22, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $10
Austin’s ultraprolific Orville Bateman Neeley III is some sort of unstoppable punk-rock machine, cranking out records with bands like Bad Sports, Blaxxx, and the Pumpers, just to name a few. But it’s with his main gig, OBN IIIs, that he really cuts loose. On the outfit’s previous records they smash together explosive, riotous, unhinged garage punk by piling feedback, noise, and manic energy atop blown-out guitar riffs, but Neeley and company move in a different direction on the brand-new Worth a Lot of Money (12XU). This time around they’ve eased back and traded pure punk-rock electricity for good old butt rock, dosing their relentless garage fury with the ham-fisted glam of Kiss, the swing-for-the-cheap-seats hooks of Cheap Trick, and the soulful guitar onslaught of Thin Lizzy. The record’s second-to-last tune, “The Stalker,” even closes out with a handful of drum solos, proving that aping your dad’s favorite records is yet another musical skill Neeley has perfected.
