Obituary, Broken Hope, Decrepit Birth, Jungle Rot, Encrust

When: Mon., Sept. 17, 6 p.m. 2012

Consistently ranked among the founding greats of death metal, Florida miscreants Obituary have been consistently, stubbornly true to their school since the hair-metal dark ages of 1988, when they changed their name from Xecutioner—and they still have three of the same members they did way back then. Their latest album, 2009's Darkest Day, is pretty damn good, and they have a new one in the works that they're bound to be excited about—so what did they do for this tour? They asked fans what songs they wanted to hear, and not at all surprisingly the fans like the old stuff. Obituary weren't put out by this, though—they apparently like the old stuff too, and they'll be playing a set drawn from their first three landmark albums: Slowly We Rot (1989), Cause of Death (1990), and The End Complete (1992). They say they'll play some songs that they've never aired live before—it's remarkable that there are any of those left, after so many years—so this might be your best chance to see them dig up some long-buried ordnance and find out if the explosives in it are still deadly. I'm betting they are. —Monica Kendrick Broken Hope, Decrepit Birth, Jungle Rot, and Encrust open.
