Re: “Is it safe to send your child to journalism school?

"If you just want a job, major in economics and apply at a bank."

If you want to work at a bank, I recommend majoring in finance or maybe accounting. I speak from experience: I have an economics degree. I interviewed at a couple of banks after college. No one gave me as much as a second interview. I ended up a journalist.

Otherwise, however, I enjoyed your comment.

Re: “Mark Kirk Fears Dick Armey

Whet, I think you mean Dick Armey, the former Texas congressman -- unless you are coining a new name for Palin's supporters, in which case, you might consider placing the definite article in front of your term.

"as a wise man once said, two is a trend"

No, no. One is a phenomenon, two is a coincidence, three is a trend -- in journalism, at least.

Re: “Chicago: All over but the post-mortem

"The IOC today sent a message to those who arrogantly pimped something that most Chicagoans didn't support."

Gene, as much as I'd like to think that the first-round vote said something about Chicago and its political machine, I have a feeling that we'll find out that it's less about Chicago and more about other factors -- perhaps some lingering Bush presidency fatigue; a feeling that the IOC should jump aboard Brazil's bandwagon before it's too late; or, given the IOC's history, something all too familiarly corrupt and nefarious

I'm just glad that we dodged this pocketbook-seeking missile.

Re: “The Real Estate King of the Chicago City Council

When it comes to learning about what our aldermen and other elected officials are up to, I think we should adopt a six-word motto: the more, the sooner, the better.

Re: “Reporting on Your Own House

I'm surprised that this story made no mention of Steve Rhodes. After Tribune Co. acquired Chicago magazine, Rhodes, the magazine's media critic, soon decided that he couldn't write about Chicago media while being employed by Chicago media's biggest company. So he left and founded the The Beachwood Reporter news and commentary site.
