Three years ago this month Cheryl Trykv was in a tizzy preparing for Energy Bath, a two-night stand she was curating at the Hideout on September 13 and 14 featuring some of her favorite fringe performers. "I was going out of my mind thinking, 'There's too much to do, I'd give anything to get out of this show,'" she recalls. "Then the attacks happened, and I thought, 'Well, no show.' But we rallied and it ended up being a really great thing." Now Do You Believe Me? is intended as a commemoration of the 9/11 tragedy, an exploration of the administration's escalating obfuscations, and a call to action, to "bridle the same power Mahatma Gandhi used to bring the British Empire to its knees," Trykv says. "We are now at about 27 tokes over the line. I would like to see America get back to just one toke over the line." This show features hard-hitting mischief makers Trykv, monologuist Jimmy Carrane, singers Vernon Tonges and Diane Izzo, and performance artist Matthew Owens, among others. Bobby Conn--described by Trykv as "Chicago's premier rock superstar"--delivers a spoken-word piece. Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, 773-227-4433. Friday-Saturday, September 10-11, 8 PM. $10.
