Set in Jefferson Park and written by a founder of that neighborhood's storefront gem, the Gift Theatre, this new play has all the local texture anybody could ask for. It also offers some very, very sharp scenes. Now it just needs another draft. As things stand, William Nedved's tale of a deeply ambivalent Chicago cop named John Moore is at once cryptic and heavy-handed: John's identity crisis is suggested but never really explored, while certain plot points can be seen coming a mile away. What's more, neither the crisis nor the plot points are adequately resolved. Si Osborne's well-cast production makes it clear that there's a strong play in the making here. Diane Mair is extraordinary as John's love interest, Rayna, putting the character’s entire history into every gesture. --Tony Adler
