Our Review

"Come for the beer, stay for the pork frites" could be the tagline for Northdown Cafe and Taproom, which combines the camaraderie of a sports bar with beer geekdom and the locavore ethos as applied to midwestern comfort food. Those pork frites were the standout of the evening—what could have been a gloppy mess of fried spuds, pulled pork, cheese sauce, pickled peppers, green onions, and (because one kind of pig is not enough) bacon offered a mix of sweet, sour, smoky, and spicy flavors that kept us sneaking bites even after it had gone cold. The rotating selection of drafts includes ales from midwestern breweries such as Three Floyds and Founders as well as several from farther afield—such as Rodenbach Grand Cru, a beguilingly sour Belgian beer. For dessert, complete the homey vibe with a house-made dessert, which could be anything from banana cream pie to blueberry-peach streusel.
