Of all the reunions at summer festivals this year, Latyrx at North Coast might not attract as much attention as, say, the Dismemberment Plan at Pitchfork, but that doesn't excuse you from seeing them. They're a top-notch exemplar of the style developed by Bay Area hip-hop label Soulsides/Quannum Projects, home to DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, and the solo work of Latyrx's two members, MCs Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker. Their sole proper full-length, 1997's Latyrx: The Album, bumps with laid-back, funky songs, their drawn-out syllables spread over thick fatback beats. The album has a classic hip-hop vibe that despite the mellow mood gets a fucked-up urgency from the duo's oddball, left-field pop instincts—on the banging opening cut, "Latyrx," the two rappers stack different vocal tracks on top of each other to create what sounds like demonic backward masking, even though they're rhyming forward. It sounds as fresh as it did 14 years ago. —Leor Galil 4:45 PM, Red Bull Grove Stage
