Re: “Brian Wilson, Pet Sounds, and the categorical denial of the sensitive black genius

It's worth pointing out that the use of anti-black racism to stoke anti-semitism, and vice versa, as deployed by the first commenter, is a common neo-Nazi trope.…

Re: “When folk music loses touch with "folks"

Wow; I really hadn't realized I'd written something nearly so alienating. Just goes to show, you really can offend all of the people some of the time.

Re: “When folk music loses touch with "folks"

So, I've been informed that people are having trouble telling that I like this album. I like this album. Creepy and decadent and off-putting are all good things, damn it.

I have a follow up here where I don't mention Lichtenstein, since that name appears to have some sort of magical power to irritate.…

Re: “Daniel Clowes under glass

No...I talk about the installation choices and the murals because that's what I was interested in, truly. Seemed like the thing to talk about, since I've seen lots of Dan Clowes' art in his comics, and I wanted to think about how it was integrated or related to the gallery setting. (It was interesting to see the originals...but mostly in that they weren't really all that interesting. I saw a Charles Schulz original recently, and was blown away. That didn't happen here so much.)

Re: “Daniel Clowes under glass

There was lots of artwork to look at when I was there, including the murals, the vinyl panels towards the ceiling, original art from Wilson, original issues in the glass cases, and pretty much everything I talk about in the piece. I didn't look at any jpegs online; all the above is a discussion of what I saw in the gallery while I was there. (I presume the jpegs you feel are inaccurate were sent to the Reader by the MCA, though I don't know for sure. I didn't have anything to do with choosing art for this piece.)

Ideally I could have seen the whole thing installed, and I spent a good bit of time talking to folks at the gallery to try to see as much of the show as possible while running up against my deadline.

If there's something in the review that you feel is inaccurate, by all means feel free to bring it up. Or if you just want to keep making vague accusations of bad faith, I guess that's your prerogative as well.
