Unconditionally honest Wallace Wallace gets detention for writing a dismissive essay about his teacher's favorite novel--and there's more punishment coming unless he can bring himself to change his opinion. Adapter William Massolia graduates the kids in Gordon Korman's 2002 book from middle school to high. But, stylistically, director Dorothy Milne keeps them back. Still, this Griffin Theatre Company production manages to overcome the disparity with charm. An onstage garage band adds to the youthful ambience, and Jeremy Fisher shines as the jaded teacher. Sometimes, though, the show seems to confuse theater for young audiences with theater for the hearing-impaired. --Dan Jakes
