There are still only two people in No Age—Randy Randall on guitar and Dean Spunt on drums and vocals—but they energize their audiences more than just about any other band in America. The LA duo play skate-punk hardcore with Husker Du’s desperate momentum and an art-school fixation on textural effects and ambient interludes. I only recently finally connected with their third album, 2010’s Everything in Between, and I imagine it will take me about as long to internalize their fourth, last month’s An Object (Sub Pop). Whereas songs on past No Age records hit hard with straightforward melodies, An Object’s tracks are more oblong in shape, with quirky, less immediate hooks. But the album is as absorbing, unusual, and distinctive as any of the band’s other work—and even its oddest material should benefit from the bottle-rocket burst of their no-frills live show. —Tal Rosenberg Running opens. No Age also plays at Empty Bottle with Joan of Arc, Club Nutz, and DJ Juiceboxxx on Sat 9/14.
